Meet the talents behind The Tiny Digital Factory, in a series of interviews.
Today, it’s Baptiste’s turn to tell us about himself and his job as QA Tester at The Tiny Digital Factory. His role is to test the games produced by the studio, detect bugs and report them to the team of programmers and the producer.
Yes, I’ve been playing a lot since I was a kid. I started out on the Playstation with platform games, and a few racing games. I didn’t play them much, but I’ve learned to appreciate them since I started working at TDF!
Then I started playing MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) on PC, the best known of which is League of Legends, but I play Battlerite, which is 2v2 or 3v3, and which is very rewarding because there are no self-guided spells or virtuous circles as rewards.
It goes back 3 years now, when I was looking for my end-of-year internship at my Game Design school. I heard about the studio through an acquaintance and saw that it matched what I was looking for in terms of size and projects, so I applied!
It’s going really well! I’ve been in Lyon for 6 or 7 years now, and it’s one of the best cities I’ve ever lived in. It’s young, it’s lively, there’s a good atmosphere… Plus I was lucky enough to find a good apartment in a quiet neighborhood, so life is really good!
I’ve never asked myself that question! But instinctively it reminds me of the first game I played, Jak & Daxter, and Jak, the main character, made an impression on me and made me want to play more video games. So I chose him!
I would say it’s the follow-up with the programmers. The relationship between them and the QA Tester is very important. You also need to have the quality of being very patient, because you might think that being a video game tester means simply playing games all day long, but it really means applying a precise protocol called a « Test Plan », and replaying the same sequence hundreds of times to find the flaws.
I’ve often been told that being a tester opens the doors to the video game industry, and it’s true. It’s easier to find a job as a QA Tester than as a Game Designer, and if you’re diligent and prove that you’re doing a good job, you can go on to become a Lead QA, as well as a Level Designer and then a Game Designer.
